PMI Austin Chapter Meeting (In-Person) - Managing the Unmanageable: Project Management in the Age of AI Agents

Ways of Working

What you'll hear about:

Traditional project management was built on predictability — defined scope, measurable milestones, and controlled outcomes. Agentic AI projects upend these assumptions.

When a major component is a nondeterministic system that may produce a different output each time it runs, classic PM frameworks need to adjust. This presentation equips project managers with a practical mental model for leading agentic AI initiatives.

We'll explore how building an agentic project differs fundamentally from traditional software or automation projects, including why familiar artifacts like fixed acceptance criteria and deterministic test plans fall short. You'll learn how to reason about nondeterminism not as a defect but as a capability, and how to define success using evaluation frameworks (Evals) that provide measurable, repeatable evidence of agent performance. We'll address the governance landscape — what's permitted, what's risky, and what's still undefined. Finally, we'll examine how the PM role itself evolves — not because soft skills suddenly matter, but because organizations structurally require a human accountable for outcomes, and the leverage equation is changing fast.
