Presentation Title: Agility in Hiking and Industry.

Pat will discuss how agile project management was applied to his successful hike of the 3,100 mile Continental Divide Trail. He will discuss his recently authored book “He-Ho”, which is intended to help those that suffer from PSP, the disease that killed his mother. In 2019, Plummer Forest Products in Post Falls, ID had a fire. This facility provided product to retail stores and contractors throughout the western US and into Canada. They risked losing contracts with major retailers if they did not restore production quickly. Pat was project manager to rebuild 4 antiquated automation systems into 1 system. By mixing agile techniques with traditional waterfall, the system was completed quickly and effectively so that Plummer resumed first quality production in 3 months.

Key Takeaways:

  • Failing to plan is planning to fail
  • Plans should be flexible and must change when necessary
  • Being resourceful can save your project and your life
  • Agile can help a project succeed but is not suited for everything
  • Teamwork among stakeholders has immediate and long term benefits

Participants will learn how:

  • A 6-month hike is a unique kind of project.
  • Select the parts of the PMBOK methodology that do and do not apply to a project
  • To be resourceful when a project (the hike) or a life (hypothermia, falling off a cliff) is at risk
  • Industrial projects are unique and agile is not a fit in every case
