Calendar of Events

The meeting will be held in the Lady Bird Lake Room. Parking is available in our attached parking lot, but these spaces do fill up quickly. If the lot is full, you may find additional street parking around our building on the following residential streets: Alamo Street, 20th Street, or Poquito Street. Upon arriving, please look for the "Conference Center" entrance, which is near the lower part of our parking lot, closest to Alamo Street. If entering through that door, the Lady Bird Lake Room will be on your left as you enter. 

PMI Austin Chapter is always looking for new local charities to host our Lunch & Learn sessions. If you know of any charities to highlight, please email our Lunch & Learn Committee Chair, Renee Adair, at LunchNLearn@pmiaustin.org.

Presentation Title: Myth, Magic or Mojo – An Introduction to Data Science for Project Managers

The current use of the term “Data Science” was first coined in 2001 and since 2010, has boomed as both a field of academic study and a commercial practice. It has been called the “Sexiest profession of the 21st Century”, but what is it really and what is all the hype about? In this presentation you will learn a brief history of Data Science, what it means and how it is used. You will also be exposed to some of the fundamental terminology and concepts of the field along with a high level explanation of how it works and the different classes of Machine Learning algorithms. You also learn about the different types of Data Scientist and what skills a good one possess.

About the Speaker: Homer Hegedus

Homer Hegedus has a passion for discovering insights and solving challenging problems through rigorous analysis of data and sound deductive reasoning, which he acquired through extensive experience as a Product Engineer, Manufacturing Technologist, Project/Program Manager, and Independent Consultant. He drove the successful development and production launch of numerous advanced Hardware, Software and System level products over more than three decades working in the Semiconductor, Industrial IoT, Medical Device and Cloud Computing industries. His current knowledge and skills in Data Science were built upon a solid foundation of Applied Industrial Statistics (SPC, DoE, Lean Six Sigma), which he leveraged to improve quality, reliability, and manufacturing yield. Through continuous education and additional experience, he honed his skills in ETL, Exploratory Data Analysis, Data Visualization and Machine Learning using a wide variety of tools and methodologies including Python, SQL, SAS, JMP, Excel and Tableau. Homer earned a BSEE from Cornell University, his PMP in 2007 and is currently employed at Itron as a Sr. R&D Program Manager.

United Way has been part of the fabric of Austin since 1924 and nationally the organization celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2012. Our local United Way Navigation Center received the first 2-1-1 call in the state over a decade ago and responded to its two millionth call in early 2012. Needs have shifted in Austin over the 90+ years and we have adapted to meet the needs of our ever-changing community, while never veering from our original and steadfast mission of fighting poverty. United Way relies on national and local research to adjust our work to achieve the greatest good. Several years ago, after local research backed up a recommendation from United Way Worldwide, United Way for Greater Austin – managed entirely by local leadership, made a shift from funding basic needs to a model of community impact work. This work aims to address financial stability, health and education, the root causes of poverty.

About the Food: 

PMI provides food from local restaurants prior to each event. In the past, we have had food from Freebirds and the Corner Bakery. If you have a special request for dietary needs, please e-mail the Lunch and Learn chair at: lunchNlearn@pmiaustin.org. We will do our best to accommodate the need, but not all requests will be possible with the given vendor.
