Dr. John C. Maxwell

#1 New York Times bestselling author, John C. Maxwell, takes you on a leadership journey through The 5 Levels of Leadership with humor, in-depth insight, and examples. He offers a unique perspective on the progressive nature of leadership and shows you how to master each level of leadership and rise up to the next level to become a more influential, respected, and successful leader. Leadership is about growth and building momentum—for yourself, your relationships, your productivity, and your people. To lead well, you must embrace your need for continual improvement—you must know where you are to know where you’re going. You must master the ability to inspire and build a team that produces not only results but builds momentum by developing future leaders.

Session 1A. Executive Session with Dr. John C Maxwell (1 Leadership PDU)
Dr. John C. Maxwell

Join Dr. Maxwell for a one-hour Q&A session on how to build and maintain your leadership momentum. Interact with a champion! Think like a champion! Note: This session is not part of the full-day symposium and requires special pre-registration.

Session 2A. Project Management – A Matter of Life and Death: Leadership Extremes (1.5 Leadership PDUs)
Todd C. Williams

Leadership’s biggest tests come under extreme stress. Stress tries our emotions, logic, ethics, and our core values. Extreme stress—both personal and professional—pushes you to the breaking point. You never know how you will perform; however, working through potential scenarios helps you face the inevitable. Project management coupled with leadership is critical not only in your business life, but also in your personal life. This session will review three situations which demonstrated that it can save your life or someone else’s life.

  • Leading in a crisis: Saving your spouse’s life by building a medical team to create the right diagnosis.
  • Leading under stress: Leading a family though the death of a child.
  • Leading with no control: Losing a grandchild to state custody and, eventually, adopting the child.

Session 2B. IBM Watson: Augmented Intelligence in Today’s Solutions (1.5 Strategic & Business Management PDUs)
Sandeep K. Desai and Steven Hale

IBM’s Strategic Transformation applies to many industries that are undergoing disruptive innovations, perhaps including your business. The impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in each of our daily lives will dwarf the impact of mobile technology. How can your business prepare for the opportunities here today and those that lie ahead? We make decisions every day that impact our business, some of which we do not even realize. Drive improved decision making with increased awareness of how external elements (like Weather) impact the bottom line of your business. This session covers IBM’s historic transformation–the 100+ year old industry leading technology firm that reinvents itself time and time again to be a relevant thought leader across industries. You will receive an overview of IBM Watson, including what it is, how it is transforming various industries, use cases for Watson, IBM’s AI engine, and IBM’s approach to AI to augment and support, rather than replace, humans in business. We will also cover the weather; that is, why IBM acquired The Weather Company, how Weather impacts each and every business/industry each and every day, and how improved decision making with Watson + Weather is improving businesses and saving lives.

Session 2C. Agile HR: The Technical Side of Leading Agile Teams (1.5 Technical PDUs)
Kevin D. Martin

This session addresses the technical aspects of Human Resources (HR) policies and cultures that may be holding back your agile transformation. Organizational agility is a key for achieving a competitive business advantage in the future. Those organizational leaders who can attract, retain, develop, reward, motivate, and lead best will create a culture of innovation and rapid adaption that leads to high performance and continuous improvement for their teams. Learn the foundational technical practices to become a more agile thinker to release the creative energy in your people and organizations. Leave with new sources for leading people in times of rapid change and rampant ambiguity, while working together with people.

Keynote 3. The Value of Project Management: PMI’s 2018 Pulse of the Profession (1 Strategic & Business Management PDU)
Dr. Al Zeitoun

PMI has seen a 27 percent decrease in the amount of money organizations are wasting due to poor project performance since 2013. Champion organizations—those who complete 80 percent or more projects on time, on budget, meeting business intent and having high benefits realization maturity—are continuing to mature their project talent, capabilities and culture. Because of this, they have higher project success rates, enjoy more successful business outcomes and waste significantly less money due to poor project performance. Organizations are facing heightened competition and ongoing disruption. They see that no one single factor drives success. Smart organizations understand that proven project management practices lead to greater success and less waste.

Session 4A. Courageous Leadership When It Matters Most (1.5 Leadership PDUs)
Kevin D. Martin

This session focuses on the practical knowledge and skills that are required to lead successful initiatives in today’s challenging business environments. During this session, Mr. Martin will share his proven skills to rapidly assess, adapt and leverage, three important skills to become more successful in achieving your goals while you deliver value to your customers and motivate your teams.

Session 4B. $305 Million Failure: What Would You Do? (1.5 Strategic & Business Management PDUs)
Todd C. Williams

In this session, the project in question will be replayed, and you will discuss and come to a conclusion on what you would have done differently to change the outcome of the project. This novel format provides valuable insight by hearing dozens of people’s views on how to approach each decision, engaging everyone in the debate, and knowing what fatal decisions contributed to this $305 million project failure.
